Location
Fulham Palace road, at the heart of Fulham, London
This Victorian Lodge was renovated and extended in 2022. Located in Fulham Cemetary, this luxury residence was created for an army veteran who had once lived opposite the cemetery and wanted to use the existing building to create an unusual home.
Originally known as the Fulham Cemetary Lodge, it was built alongside a chapel and gatehouse and had fallen into disrepair.
The Lodge was reinvigorated with dramatic design by Simon Gill Architects. It has been extended with Bath stone cladding while the original composition has been repaired and enhanced, allowing the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ to complement each other. The retained lodge has been dramatically refurbished and extended to create this beautiful home surrounded by courtyards.
A key driver behind the Architect’s design was to ensure the new elements of The Lodge were secondary to the building’s original Victorian architecture. He also wanted to maximise natural light without compromising privacy. To achieve this, he cleverly positioned the floor plan between courtyards, illuminated by lightwells, to secure privacy. The courtyards have also been designed with privacy in mind.
Inside, the interiors are visually simple. The bedrooms and bathrooms are contained within the original lodge building while the shared living areas have been placed within the extension.
The large basement has guest accommodation, a media room and utility spaces. There is also a subterranean swimming pool finished with dark materials and dramatic lighting from a large lightwell overhead. Other unexpected elements of the design include a secret door and a “ghost window” that appears in the stairwell when sunlight seeps through one of the roof lights. Brickwork is exposed internally
The Lodge is completed by an extensive landscape design that includes a formal courtyard garden with a moat, plus an informal side garden and wildflower roof.
