La Colombe d’Or, St Paul de Vence

“An intimate establishment that has kept its true soul despite legendary status”

The Colombe d’Or started life in 1920 as “Chez Robinson”, a café bar with an open air-terrace where people would dance at weekends. It soon attracted characters from the neighbourhood, which gave the idea to Paul with the support of his wife Baptistine “Titine”, to extend and reopen as the Colombe d’Or, an inn of 3 rooms. The friendly atmosphere together with Paul’s deep interest in the arts brought the visit of many artists and the walls were soon covered by paintings, which often were exchanged for a stay or a few meals.

In 1940 the south became the “free zone” and a whole variety of thinkers and artists moved to the Cote d’Azur turning the Colombe d’Or into one of their places to meet. Jacques Prevert for instance, on the set of Carnet’s “Devils Envoys” lodged at the hotel and somehow never left, he moved to the village and became Paul’s close friend. The careful expansion continued with the facade being assembled with stones from an old castle in Aix-en-Provence and the architect Jacques Couelle designing a fireplace with the hand imprints of the people who helped to build it.

The end of the war saw the arrival of the international crowd and the new friendships between Paul’s son Francis and new visitors: Yves Montand, Lino Ventura, Serge Reggiani. Francis married Yvonne a young women of Danish origin and together they followed in Paul’s steps, commissioning amongst other things a colourful ceramic by Fernand Leger for the terrace. The fifties were the time of Miro, Braque, Chagall, followed by the time of Calder, Cesar and all the others, it is also, in 1951, the story of Montand and Simone Signoret and their wedding in Saint-Paul.

The art collection has grown years after years until today; the latest work installed is a large ceramic by the Irish artist Sean Scully for the swimming pool area.

And the Roux family continues to take care of the Colombe d’Or.

“The world famous Colombe d’Or hotel enjoys a privileged location, and unites the Provençal way of life with an amazing and unique private modern art collection. For decades, the Roux family has held the secret of this unrivalled art of living, and has been host to such extraordinary personalities as Pablo Picasso, Jacques Prévert, Yves Montand and James Baldwin. Regular visitors to this beautiful location, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Calder, César and many others have left their magnificent works of art which are now an integral part of this unique setting.” M. Assouline.

Locanda Cipriani, Torcello

In 1934, Giuseppe Cipriani took over a small and modest resale of wine and olive oil, and turned it into a “inn”, with few but delightful guest rooms and a pleasant room for the restaurant, surrounded by a garden of flowers and vegetables, overlooking the unparalleled views of the churches of Torcello.

From the beginning Giuseppe was joined in the inn run by his wife’s sister, Gabriella, who characterized the atmosphere of the place with its particular sweetness for over 30 years. In the early ’80s, Giuseppe’s daughter, Carla took over him, and was joined a few years later by his son, Bonifacio Brasswho is currently the director and sole owner of the Inn.

The Inn was consecrated as a literary myth for having hosted Ernest Hemingway in the fall of 1948.
Joined in Venice by his wife Mary, Papa Hemingway was already a legend at the time. He knew Torcello, having been won over by the island’s unique charm. In fact, he decided to spend the whole month of November at Locanda Cipriani, dividing his time between duck hunting, writing his novel “Across the River and Into the Trees” and at his table alongside the Locanda’s fogher. The impressions and memories of that November in Torcello are forever imprinted on the pages of his novel.

Hemingway returned to Locanda Cipriani with his wife Mary in the spring of 1954 during their stay in Venice and following their unfortunate experience in Africa. It was a day filled with caviar and vodka, in the gentle springtime sun.

After that September in 1938 many other royal families visited Locanda Cipriani. In May 1961 Locanda was host to Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during a visit to Venice on board the Britannia. Even today, the Locanda is the only restaurant that Queen Elizabeth II has visited privately. Only a few years earlier than Queen Elisabeth II, in the mid-1950s, Edward Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson were at the Locanda for the opening of the Venetian season.

Many choose Locanda Cipriani for holding their events, as the American heiress Barbara Hutton did in September 1957, when she wanted the island to be decorated by thousands of candles for her grand party.

During our 80 years of service, over a thousand weddings, countless receptions and business dinners have been organized.

Both for large events and small groups of people, Locanda Cipriani grants the highest standards thanks to the uniqueness of its location, the professionalism of the staff, the expertise gained in over 80 years of experience and especially the quality of food. Our menus are based on the “Cipriani cuisine”, which is considered an excellence brand of Veneto and has found a high popularity among our worldwide customers. Along with the classic “Cipriani cuisine” dishes, we also propose traditional Venice cuisine, based on selected local products of our territory.

Completing the offer, Locanda Cipriani has 5 bedrooms, all located on the first floor and different from each other: 3 single rooms and 2 junior suites.

La Sponda, Positano

A culinary love letter to Naples, Vesuvius & the Amalfi Coast

At first, it’s the view that fells you. Positano’s jaunty stack of houses and its iridescent church dome are so close you feel you could reach out and touch them. No wonder so many marriage proposals have been made here over the years. Of an evening, the soft glow helps, cast by hundreds of suspended candles that take an hour to light in the evening and almost as long to extinguish. But musicians Franco and Andrea have to shoulder their share of blame too, for making things so romantic. Their lilting guitar and mandolin melodies have melted many a heart.

Any chef will tell you that stunning backdrops like this are a challenge. But for La Sponda’s executive chef Gennaro Russo, that view, that music and what’s on the plate aren’t that different. All three are the result of centuries of patient symbiosis between man and the natural world. In a simple plate of pasta al pomodoro, a branzino grilled to perfection or a Neapolitan babà dessert so light and fluffy you can cut it with the side of a fork lie stories of viscounts and peasants, fishermen and princes, but also stories of rivers, forests and volcanoes, dry-stone wall terraces and patiently tilled kitchen gardens.

These days, so many restaurants bang a big drum about their ‘fresh, local and seasonal’ approach. Honestly, why would you eat any other way? Gennaro Russo has been doing fresh, local and seasonal since he first began to cook at home in Somma Vesuviana.

But it’s not enough just to find the perfect ingredients – you need to respect them too. The trick, Gennaro believes, is to listen to the land, to its culture, its produce, and then distil what you’ve learned to its purest essence. Any chef worth their salt can do ‘fancy’. The really difficult thing is to do simple.

La Sponda is open for dinner and lunch seven days a week.

“No wonder that so many marriage proposals have been made here over the years”

estiatorio Milos, London

Only a short walk from Piccadilly Circus, situated in the former British Columbia House in Westminster, with huge wooden doors that open wide to welcome guests, Milos London combines the unsurpassed elegance of London with the unassuming charm of Greece. Mediterranean seafood reigns, as always, in harmony with local selections from the Bay of Biscay.

Milos, opened in 2015, is a true destination situated in the very centre of London, bringing together the thriving business district with the heart of London’s West End and tourism trade. Extraordinary architecture sets the tone and includes a magnificent space for private events. The essential elements of Milos — marble, light wood, and Grecian urns — are complemented by the formal elegance of a circa 1915 building. In the very center is the crown jewel of Milos hospitality, a signature fish market.
